In spring, the temperature gradually rises. Temperature and humidity are all suitable for the growth and formation on spawns and sporocarps of Shiitake. On that occasion, mushroom buds massively appear, mushroom flushes concentrate and it is the peak season for Shiitake growth. However, the changeable climate and temperature can affect the yield and quality of Shiitake under improper management, some moldy tubes and rotten mushrooms even appear. Therefore, in spring cultivation of Shiitake, you have to conduct perfect management and accomplish Six Attentions and Precautions to achieve superior and high yield.
1. Determine water-spraying by weather and prevent mould: The water-spraying during the growth period of Shiitakes in spring should be conducted under the condition that the consecutive weather is sunny and the surface of fungus tubes is dryish. You should try to prevent rotten tubes cause by too high humidity. After picking Shiitakes in the forenoon, spray water by sprayer on the surface of fungus tubes, after that, you could air fungus tubes for 30 minutes and then cover thin film, it should be noted that water-spraying should be avoided in cloudy and rainy day, on wet fungus tubes or the period before mushroom picking.
2. Film-covering on fungus bed should be flexible and oxygen deficit should be prevented: In spring, the humidity is a little big high, hence you could combine with film-covering, ventilation and mushroom picking to prevent oxygen deficit, what’s more, films should be covered after mushroom picking. When the temperature rises to above 20 degrees, both sides of films should be uncovered and ventilated. In rainy or sultry day, you could wholly uncover all around the films to ventilate. When regaining fungus tubes that have been soaked in water to fungus bed and in early spring or cold snap, you could cover thin films tightly for 3 days to keep warm and rejuvenate strains. When the temperature is above 25 degrees, uncover films and ventilate for 2-3 times to promote the growth everyday.
3. The alternation of wetting and drying should be moderate and the phenomenon of out of control should be prevented: After picking each flush of mushroom, you could uncover film and ventilate for 8-10 hours to keep dryish surface of fungus tubes. In sunny day, spray water again, tightly cover thin film to rejuvenate spawns. After 12 PM, you could uncover film and ventilate for one hour to conduct low-temperature stimulation and induce mushroom buds, this action can be repeated for 3 to 4 days.
4. Fungus tubes should be moderately cleaned up to prevent pollution: In spring, sundry fungi always mildew in rotten fungus tubes that situate in the part of mushroom base. After picking each flush of mushroom, timely clean up to prevent the pollution, you could use knife to get rid of the part that carries mould and then array tubes in fungus bed and realize the ventilation, when finding that fungus tubes are dryish, you could cover film, control the temperature and moisturize to promote the growth of spawns and mushrooms.
5. Guarantee moderate fertilizer-supplementing and prevent overwetting: After the growing of autumn and winter, nutrients in fungus tubes have been massively consumed, hence the soaking and fertilizer supplementing are key links in spring management, yet, rotten fungus tubes and mushrooms resulted from too high humidity should be prevented. In order to help spawns recover nutrition and continue to grow, accelerate the decomposition and accumulate nutrients as quickly as possible, you could timely soak fungus tubes in water and supplement fertilizer. One flush of mushroom can be harvested with one time of soaking. Meanwhile, through the soaking, the difference between dry and wet can be widened and the yield can be increased as well.
6. The picking and processing of mushroom should be in due course and prevent cap opening: In spring Shiitake cultivation, too early picking usually affects yield, too late picking easily causes cap-opening and the reducing in weight, which debases the merit of the products. In general, you could conduct the picking when you find that Shiitakes are 80% matured, meaning that pellicles have broken, fungus caps haven’t fully developed and Shiitakes are a little bit involute. What’s more, processing should be done on the day of picking.
