Finnish: pupils’ space mushroom project set for lift-off
2014-07-14 11:27:38
Children from a Finnish school have developed an experiment that will leave earth tomorrow bound for the International Space Station (ISS). They are aiming to find out if mushrooms can be made to grow in space.
Children from the Espoo Christian School will have a special interest in the Orbital-2 cargo spacecraft launch on Sunday. That’s because their project — an experiment in mushroom cultivation — will be on board, bound for a stint at the International Space Station.
The students were assisted by Kari Steffen, a docent at Helsinki University. Their micro-lab will host a variety of mushrooms found at the bus stop outside the school.
Lift-off has been delayed because of poor weather at the Wallops, Virginia launch site, and is now scheduled for Sunday evening at 19:52 Finnish time. There will be a live stream on the NASA website.
The project is a collaboration with the Valley Christian Schools of San Jose, California. The US institution helps partner schools use so-called NanoRacks micro-gravity equipment for science experiments designed for space, with nine partner schools on board this time. The Espoo Christian School is the only European school involved this year.
Schools interested in following in the Espoo pupils’ footsteps can contact the Valley Christian Schools for more information.
